Avec constance et détermination, les Chemises rouges se sont mobilisées pendant plus de deux mois dans les rues de Bangkok pour affirmer leur aspiration à la démocratie et à la justice sociale. Le gouvernement conduit par Abhisit Vejjajiva a choisi de répondre à ces aspirations par la violence et la répression. En autorisant l’usage d’armes de guerre pour disperser les rassemblements, il a commis de très graves violations des droits humains. Le bilan est lourd : au moins 89 morts et près de 2000 blessés.
Aujourd’hui, les libertés démocratiques ne sont plus garanties : des mandats d’arrêts ont été issus contre 99 personnes. Les lieux de détentions de la plupart des personnes emprisonnées sont gardés secrets. Le gouvernement censure les médias alternatifs. Les chefs d’accusation sont particulièrement graves : de 3 à 15 ans de prisons pour « lèse majesté » et jusqu’à la peine de mort pour « terrorisme ».
Les Chemises rouges sont traitées par le gouvernement comme des « terroristes. C'est un mouvement composite, mais aujourd'hui porté pour l'essentiel par des gens ordinaires, laissés pour compte, dont les droits politiques élémentaires comme le respect de leur vote sont bafoués.
Le gouvernement thaïlandais peut poursuivre sa politique de répression d'autant plus librement que ses constantes violations des droits humains n’ont pas suscité les réactions de solidarité et les condamnations internationales à la mesure des événements.
Nous appelons les organisations progressistes et démocratiques à exiger dans le plus grand nombre de pays possible la fin de la répression et le respect des libertés fondamentales en Thaïlande; à engager une campagne internationale pour la libération des prisonniers politiques, pour l'arrêt des intimidations et des inculpations de Chemises rouges.
Nous demandons au gouvernement thaïlandais qu’il lève l’État d’urgence et rétablisse immédiatement les libertés démocratiques dans le pays ; qu’il mette fin à la répression contre les Chemises rouges et que tous les détenus soient relâchés sans délais.
